When you hear of someone suffering from a heart condition, you might think of an older man. The typical heart attack victim in the US is a man 66 years of age. In November 2012, doctors were surprised by the death of a young Massachusetts man due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Tissue samples were taken. The man had no prior serious medical condition and no known heart problems. He was one of three people between 26 and 38 years old to die from cardiac complications within a nine-month period. There was no obvious explanation for any of the cases. However, the heart damage was similar in all three cases.
The other two victims were from New York and Connecticut. All three states are known for a high incidence of Lyme disease. After investigation, all three victims died from cardiac death. They were all linked to Lyme Carditis, inflammation of the heart muscle. Death from Lyme Carditis is rare but not new.
On December 13, 2013, the CDC report, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report detailed the cases occurring in a 9-month period. Dr. Joseph D. Forrester, one of the authors, agrees Lyme heart complications are not new. He went on to say, “However, given the severity of what happened and the tragedy of three young people to die suddenly, it was very important to investigate these cases.”
There are 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year in the US. It is important to know the health problems disease may cause. To complicate matters, the disease is often misdiagnosed. This makes prevention even more important.
